Psalm 14:1 – “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.”

It’s April 1, April Fools Day. There will be many jokes played on people today, so beware. For the most part, it’s all just fun and games.

But God takes fools very seriously.

In the Bible being called a fool was a serious offense. The word “fool” was a HUGE thing, very near a curse word in our lingo.

This verse gives us the essence of a fool – one who says in his heart that there is no God. I don’t get it. How can someone even bring that thought to mind?

We have a whole group of people these days running around trying to tell us God doesn’t exist. In fact, last night, my daughter was reading in her science book (from her Christian school, I might add) about evolution. The book was attempting to teach my child that fish decided to come out of the water and grow legs and walk on dry ground. Of course, my daughter, being the hoot she is, says to me, “Listen to how dumb this is mom.” Love that girl. I said to her, “Why is that in your science book?” She says, “Because they are dumb.” Looking in the front of the book, I found a stamp put there by the school to inform the reader that the school does not agree with everything published in the book but adheres to a strict following of Biblical standards. They utilize a variety of books to give the student a broad understanding of what science and the world teaches, AKA – you have to know your enemy. Not that evolutionist are our enemy, but the devil who promotes those ideas is.

Any way…

My point is this – there are tons and tons of people out there that don’t believe in God, let alone the One, True God of Heaven. And they are fools.

Proverbs 9:6 – “Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.”

Life is too short for foolishness. God is too amazing to neglect Him. Heaven is too close to reject it. I think the verse from Proverbs pretty much sums it all up – live away from foolishness and go in understanding.

Choose life

Deuteronomy 30:19 – “I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live “

Yesterday was the anniversary of a friend of mine’s car accident. This accident left her with significant injuries that require 24 hour nursing care. I didn’t know her at the time of the accident. But yesterday, the reality of it all just kind of hit me (so to speak).

She has been dealing with all kinds of issues for nine years. And do you know what she said yesterday? “I should have a party because I died, but I lived.” That statement makes me want to cry. She wasn’t down about her condition or feeling sorry for herself because of all that she now has to face. She wanted to have a party and celebrate the fact that she chose life.

Before we accepted Christ, we were all in that dead state. We really didn’t know how to live. Oh, we may have had a good time and did some fun and crazy things, but we weren’t truly living. Real life, true life only comes through Jesus. Walking in His ways brings true joy, true life.

I see all that my friend goes through and all the challenges she faces and I wonder “why?” Why does she have to go through all this? Why did this happen to her? And then I remind myself that the reason behind it all is not my burden to carry. God has a reason for all of it. God has a reason that He wanted her to live. God has a reason that He wants me to live.

You know, the day that we accepted Christ should be a day to be celebrated every year. It is the day we chose to live. Days may get murky and problems may seem to be sweeping you out to sea but always remember this – You have chosen to live. So live today, princess. Live in each and every moment. And don’t just live for yourself. Live for the One who gave you life – Jesus.

Got to be true

Habakkuk 2:4 – “See, the enemy is puffed up; his desires are not upright – but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness” (NIV)

We had a little old school Steven Curtis Chapman in the car yesterday. I love that my kids enjoy listening to “old” music.

Anyway, the song was “It’s got to be true”. Remember that one? The one with a spotlight on TobyMac? This was back when Toby was doing the DC Talk thing. It always cracks me up.

The chorus to the song is this:
It’s got to be true, I gotta be living what I say I believe
It’s got to be true, even when nobody but Jesus is watching me
It’s got to be true, every single minute of every day
If anybody’s ever gonna look at me and say, hey, it’s got to be true.

Unfortunately, there are actors in the world. And some people act for so long that they forget who they really are. They don’t know any more. It is why there will be church members in hell. They have played church for so long that they have forgotten why they are even there.

How about you? Are you being true to Jesus or are you just acting the part? Tough question, right? We don’t want to think that we are being insincere in what we are doing. But remember the verses in Matthew 7:21-23? Jesus reminds the people that just because you are doing all these wonderful things in His name, that doesn’t get you anything in eternity. What does count is when those things are done with Christ in your heart. You have got to be true. True to the fact that you have chosen Jesus as your Savior. That is the only way to Heaven. You won’t get there on good works, sweet words or spending lots of money. Salvation through Jesus Christ is the only way.

So today, princess, are you living true? Or are you living “puffed up”? Are you artificially inflated with your own “good deeds”? Or are you living flat and true? You gotta be plumb empty (to borrow a phrase from my grandma) before Jesus can fill you up. Be true. Every minute of every day.

The Shell

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 – “For The Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet The Lord in the air. And so we will be with The Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.”

If that doesn’t make you smile, I don’t know what will!

My daughter brought home a shell she was given by a friend. It was a naturally hinged shell that she unhinged on the way home. I thought her lip would hit the floor, she was so upset. I told her we would fix it when we got home.

We get so upset when our shells get damaged. I’m not talking only about the ones we gather on the shore but also about the one you are in right now. Sometimes we forget that this body is just a shell. That we are meant for bigger and better things.

However, you have to roll with the punches and we have to take care of our shell. So many people are hurting – their shell is hurting or they are hurting their shell.

But one day (in the near future), we are going to say goodbye to this shell. We will be with the Father, either by death or rapture.

Rapture. How cool would it be to be standing in a graveyard on that day?! I get giddy just thinking about hearing that trumpet call me home. O, to be able to hug my Savior and tell Him I love Him face to face. I know I will have to get in line for that one, but I don’t mind the wait!

We need to live like at any moment The Lord will come-a-calling. Today princess, take some time and search out the eastern sky. Look for Him not only in the air but in every situation you find yourself in today. Tell someone how excited you are about the time that is coming where you finally see The Lord face to face.

The Wife part 3 – The Cheerleader

Proverbs 12:4 – “A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.”

I know that some women do not like to be considered “possessions” of a man. I know that some will read this verse and think that is what this is referring to. I don’t see it that way. Is a cheerleader the possession of the football team?

Nope. Same type of concept. We, as a wives, are to be a helper to our husband. God created us as a “helper” to our husband (see Genesis 2:18).

As a helper, we are to build up and not tear down. In this verse of Scripture, Solomon is sharing what a wife should desire to look like.

“Noble” – On Dictionary.com, this word means “of an admirably high quality; notably superior; excellent”. Lofty goals, right? All this is saying is that we need to be better than the status quo. The average person is okay to their husband. As a princess, your prince deserves to be treated as such – even if he is not leading your home for The Lord. You never know, you might be the one to lead him there by your respectful actions and “noble character”.

Speaking of character, let’s look at that a bit more. “Character” is defined by Dictionary.com as “qualities of honesty, courage, or the like; integrity”. Well…how about that?

Put these two definitions together and you get…..”excellent integrity”. A life above reproach. Tough. I know. Remember, I’m in the trenches with ya sister!

But the alternative is gross! “Decay in his bones”! Yuck! Who wants to be that?!

Today, princess, I want to encourage you to live your day in “excellent integrity”. Clean that house with all you have. Work that job in such a way that make people gawk. Do whatever you do today at such a high level that your husband says, “Wow babe! I don’t know how you do it! Thank you!”
