The Filter

Psalm 19:14 – “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

This is one of my most favorite verses in the Bible. Oh, I have several favorites, that is true. But this one really speaks to me. It is truly the prayer of my heart.

I blogged yesterday about the tongue and how easily it can tear down or build up. This verse is along the same path.

I fear, at times, that we really don’t think about what we say before we say it. We engage our mouth before our brain. I know I am the first one guilty of that one.

How much different would things be if we just took a breath before we said what had just rolled through our minds? That is something I find intriguing in seniors, older people that is. I work at a nursing home 2 days a week. Before we moved, I worked at one part time, but essentially full time because I was there everyday, all day. Anyway, I have learned something about older people with dementia and/or Alzheimer’s, they say whatever they think. Now let me tell you, that has caused several rolls of laughter. Not at them, but with them. It seems that we all have a filter in our head that filters out words that should be said and words that shouldn’t be said. As we get older, that filter does too and sometimes it leaves all together. That’s when we have trouble….and laughter.

That rambling being said, we need a filter. And that filter should be the Holy Spirit. It not only needs to filter the words coming out of our mouth but also the thoughts swirling around in our head. Both of these need to be monitored and controlled by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Daily it is my prayer that the things that I say and the things that I think and the things that I do would be pleasing in His sight. Some days are better than others, I must say.

So my challenge to you, princess, is to let the Savior guard you mouth and your thoughts. Let Him use the Holy Spirit to filter things out. And just on a side note, appreciate your elders. They have seen and done a lot in their life and they deserve the respect of their age and wisdom. Sometimes their advice may seem antiquated, but roll with them. They still have much to offer.
