Afraid of the dark

Ephesians 6:12 – “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

Are you afraid of the dark? Are you frightened by things that you cannot see but imagine that they are there hiding for you in the dark?

For some people this is a very real, very scary thing to endure. There is extreme fear to them when they are alone or when they find themselves completely engulfed in darkness. I have been around people who have experienced this two times this week. One was afraid of the dark and the other was fearful that something was following her while she was alone in the house. I don’t understand this fear because I have never experienced it on that level. However, just like any other fear, it can be overcome.

But what I wanted to get at today is this – we face real and very scary things every day and most of the time, we don’t even realize it. You see, we fight a battle that no one sees. It is a spiritual battle. It is the one that is fought in the hallways of our heart when we have to decide whether we are going to do this or do that, will I choose to follow after Christ or will I choose my own way.

The devil has a vested interest in this battle. He knows that every time we choose to go against what we know is truth and righteousness that he has won a small victory. And he is a powerful foe. We sometimes think of him as a little red demon with a tail, pitchfork and horns. But in reality, I believe that he is much more scary than that. I imagine a coldness in his eyes that would send your heart into arrest and a snarl on his lips that would make you cry. And it’s not just him – he has a whole gaggle of demons doing his bidding. He can’t be everywhere all the time but he can send his hinch men out to do his thing.

It’s not a pretty picture. And we imagine that he is out there especially at night, in the dark. He and his demons are, after all, called “the rulers of the darkness of this world”. So it only makes since that darkness frightens us.

But we do have this – 2 Timothy 1:7 – “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” You see, we have no need to fear the dark. God did not give us a spirit of fear. He gave us much more than that. We have power – power in Him and His salvation. He gave us love – unconditional love that will last through eternity. He gave us a sound mind – to make the choice not to be afraid of what we do not see.

I want to encourage you today to choose not to be afraid. Don’t let fear have a seat at your table. Fight that spiritual fight with the armor of God and claim the power, love and sound mind that He has promised to those who choose Him.

Shine on, sister!

Matthew 5:16 – “Let your light so shine before men, that they might see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

I had some trouble coming home last night from revival. God was putting on quite a light show and I was driving. There was a storm going on north of us and the lightning was AMAZING! It wasn’t the kind of lightning that looked, from where I was at, to be doing a lot of damage. I’m sure somewhere people were taking cover. But the backside of the storm was quite the show. Every time that the sky lit up, you could see just the outline of the clouds. You could tell that they were some serious looking clouds yet you could hear no thunder. That’s how far away the storm was.

Anyway, the whole scene reminded me that this is how we are supposed to be as followers of Christ. The world is dark. I mean super dark. And we are called to shine our light. By shining our light, we show others Jesus. Just like the lightning showed me the clouds brewing around the storm, we are to show others Jesus by the actions that we live out.

But the whole lightning thing made me think about this as well – our light should not be surprising and short lived. Our light should be a sustaining light. The kind that stays around and lights up everything.
Our light should also be bright. Some of the lightning was not as bright as other strikes. Our light needs to be super bright. Another thing we have noticed this week is the brightness of a green light on a stop light when it is dark. There is this one stop light that is usually red when we approach it. And when it turns green, you are momentarily blinded by the brightness. Our light should be so bright that others have no doubt of who we belong to.

So today, princess, how is your light? Does your light brighten up a dark world? Is it short lived or long lasting? Is the brightness of your light skull piercing or just barely there (like a nightlight when you are trying to sleep)? Jesus said that we need to shine our light before men. This light will show others your good works that you have done for your Savior. And when people see your light, they should glorify the Father, not you. You see, God doesn’t want us to shine our light on ourself, but rather, He wants us to shine our light on Him. Because He is the True Light. And He is the Light from which all others get their light. Shine on, sister!

A walk in the dark

Psalm 119:105 – “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

My daughter had her 5th grade promotion ceremony Friday night. It was very sweet and special. The man who is the youth pastor at the church where her school is at gave a little devotion to encourage the kids. He is amazing. He has such a way with words and Biblical examples.

Anyway, he made this statement to the kids: Remember what you have learned in the Light when you are walking in the darkness. That made me stop, grab my phone and quick punch it into my notes. That was good.

We are all walking in darkness. It is all around us, even at noon. The things that we and our children encounter in this old world is pure darkness. There are so many people out there with malcontent in their hearts. So many people looking for a way to take advantage of someone else. So many people looking for an opportunity to mock or criticize someone else. Darkness.

But princess, we have something special. We have the Light. I once heard the verse above described in a very vivid way. Back in Bible times, they didn’t have flashlights (duh, Melissa!). So they would light tiny lamps and attach them to their sandals. Cute, right? But think about the fire hazard! The point is this – the Word of God is supposed to be the lamps on our feet as we walk through the dark. The Word has been preserved all these years to show us the Way. His Word lights our path. But we have to choose to light the lamps.

I know I have been on a kick lately about choice. But I can’t stress it enough. I think too many times in our society we are too quick to blame someone else for our woes when all along it has been our choices that have led to the problems we have. Well, enough! If you choose to leave your lamp unlit, then man up and walk alone in the dark. It is your choice. I know that sounds harsh but there comes a point in time when you either run with the big dogs or stay on the porch.

Princess, Jesus does not desire for us to walk alone in the dark. He wants to walk with us and hold our hand. He stands today with hand outstretched waiting for you to take hold. Won’t you walk through this dark world with Him?

Matthew 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world. A city on hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a candle and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

I write this today in darkness. I was writing in my prayer journal about 5:15 am when the electricity began to sputter. Then darkness. Now, you must remember that where I live, dark is serious darkness. No light from anything except the moon and it is not shining bright this morning.

So here I am surrounded by candles and flashlights, not looking forward to getting the little people up to get ready for school in the dark. There is a reason I was born in the time of electricity!

It reminds me of the verse above. I have put out some candles and have some flashlights ready to use to get ready. These lights will light a room where darkness prevails.

We are supposed to be this light for The Lord. We are supposed to show His love inside of us to a dark world, a really dark world. Things are bleak without the Light of the world. People need to see Him in us.

So today, princess, be a light on a hill to someone in need. Let them know that Jesus loves them unconditionally. He want to light their candle for Him.

1John 1:5-7 – “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

Light. How thankful are you that you can walk into a room and turn on the light? All darkness runs away when that switch goes up. It hides under furniture and in corners. The light is way more powerful than the darkness.

Now let’s apply that spiritually. The Light of God is way more powerful than the darkness of Satan. Oh, Satan has his time when darkness rules over things. But all it takes is one candle flame to send it packing. Darkness will never win. It may seem like it is winning, but in the end, Light will always win.

We all know people who act one way and say another. There are people acting like followers of Christ who are not. It is like someone walking around in the middle of the night with one of those crank lights. As long as they keep it moving, light will shine. But when their arm gets tired, the light goes out. People can be the same way. They can pretend to follow Christ but when things get tough, they pitter out and the true nature of things is revealed. They are not living by the truth.

Today, take a good look, princess, at how you are presenting yourself to the world. Do they see Christ in the up times as well as the low times? Are you truly walking in the Light if His Word or are you just cranking the light out?

Be the Light, sister, to those around you that have no light.

Hope is rising

Psalm 25:4-5 – “Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”
It is 5:30 in the morning here and it is very dark. They say that the darkest time of night is just before the dawn.
Princess, we are in the darkest part of night in our world. The Son is getting ready to pop over the horizon and take us home.
It has been a long way home too. Followers of Christ have been looking and hoping for His return for centuries. We are blessed to live in a time where we are getting very close. It is a scary time as well. We have a record of what will happen but so many opinions on how it will happen. I don’t want to hash out theology, so let’s just agree that it is getting close and it will not be a bed of roses. (By the way, I have never understood that phrase. How can of bed of roses be easy with all those thorns?) Anyway….
Hope. We have a hope, as a child of the King, that no one else has. We have the hope that He is coming back to get us and that He will walk with us down His path until He comes. How cool is that?
And even though everything around us is in the dark, we walk in the Light. The Son has dawned in our life and we walk down the long road home.
But we mess up. We stray off the path sometimes. We fall down when we don’t watch where we are going. That is why He is there. To show, guide and teach us how to follow Him.
If you can, princess, I want you to get up early tomorrow and watch the sun rise. Not only is it a beautiful sight, but let it remind you that hope is rising. And it is rising up in you.

This is the day….

Psalm 118:24 – “This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
Such a simple Psalm with such great power.
We see so much darkness in this world. People killing innocent people. People betraying the freedoms that give them the right to speak out. People admitting to lying as the top “bad habit” that they practice.
You have to make a choice each day, princess, before you even get out of bed. Are you going to choose to have a good day or are you going to let someone else make that choice for you?
God has given you today. Rejoice! Find little things and little ways to be happy today. Don’t let the darkness overtake you. Stand firm and live in the Light!
