Matthew 5:14-17 – “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your goodworks, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
There are three types of light. There is natural light – light that comes from the sun. There is artificial light – from the light bulbs in our home. And there is reflected light – the light we get from the moon at night.
Natural light can be compared to Jesus. Malachi 4:2 – “But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.” Here Malachi calls Jesus the sun. It’s only right to think of Jesus as the sun – He supposed to be the center of our universe. John reminds us in Revelation that there will be no need for the sun we have now in Heaven because Jesus will be our Light. Now that is hard to wrap my brain around.
Artificial light is just like artificial Christians, close but not the same. You can tell that there is just something off. Artificial light these days is slow to warm up to its full brightness. That drives me crazy! Especially in the bathroom! I guess you could say that one benefit to artificial light is that it certainly makes you appreciate the real deal.
And then you have reflective light. This is where we are supposed to be as followers of Christ. Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we are to reflect the Light of the never ending Savior. We are supposed to be the reflection of Him in the darkness of the world.
I learned this weekend that the last phrase of this verse “Let your light so shine” is very unique. The way that it is worded in the original language is more along the lines of “allow you light to shine”. That puts a whole new thought on it. I can allow my light not to shine. I have that choice. I can choose to out my candle under the table. I can choose to ignore it and leave it to not burn as brightly.
So today princess, be that reflected light. Shine back the Light of the world. Don’t dim your testimony. Don’t hide under the table. Stand up and stand out for all to see.
